Tarmac Case Study

Heavy building materials giant Tarmac has successfully undergone a major SAP transformation, with the help of Diagonal, to upgrade its systems to SAP R/3 4.6c and deliver an integrated HR & Payroll solution.

Tarmac employs over 8,000 people based in over 700 sites across the UK.

What we delivered

SAP was to be introduced to over 150 new locations, and Fortek’s third party order and distribution system into 170 new sites in just 9 months followed by a full upgrade to R/3 4.6c.

Also undertaken was the successful migration of the company’s legacy payroll and HR systems onto SAP Payroll – making it the largest UK SAP Payroll implementation to date. Tarmac’s legacy internal resource needed to develop completely different skill sets to enable them to independently maintain the software in the future.

The benefits

The creation of a shared finance service centre providing each of Tarmac’s businesses with access to clear financial information and expertise.  Development and delivery of a new contracting solution which gives Tarmac National Contracting’s project estimators the ability to capture cost, performance and out-turn information.

On the payroll side, Tarmac is already realising significant benefits including improved data security and processing performance.  It has also enabled the formation of one ‘shared service’ payroll department for the company, resulting in cost reductions.
